What does this categorize?

"6x6 rangefinder folding" is a subcategory of this; does this mean that what is in this larger category are 6x6 folders that don't have rangefinders? Or in other words, could another subcategory (let's call it "6x6 non-rangefinder folding" for a moment, though I'd hope to think of a more elegant alternative) be created, and everything that's now in this category moved to either the one or the other of its subcategories? -- Hoary 06:03, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

You are right, there is a problem here. As you have said, the probable solution is to create another sub-category, a name suggestion would be "6x6 viewfinder folding" (by analogy with "35mm rangefinder" vs "35mm viewfinder"). The same problem exists in all the categories called "folding". --Rebollo fr 06:24, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

That sounds good to me. However, there's no reason to rush. For a moment, let's put the terminology aside. How about a trichotomy: coupled rangefinder, non-coupled rangefinder, and no rangefinder? -- Hoary 06:34, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

Why not, however some articles would need a very large number of categories, when the same series of models existed in 4.5×6 and 6×6, both in uncoupled R/F, coupled R/F and viewfinder form. For example the Mihama Six page would need three categories with similar names. Of course we can decide that this is not a problem, after all the Makina page appears in many categories too. --Rebollo fr 06:43, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

Ah, but the categories there are odd. Consider "4.5x6 strut folding" (which contains a single member, Makina). If I understand correctly, "strut" means it doesn't actually fold, so "strut folding" is a bit paradoxical: better, "strut collapsible". Yes, "collapsible" cameras could be divided into "strut" and "folding".

When I say that they could be divided, I don't mean that they should be divided. On the contrary, it's better to think before recategorizing. But let's consider: Skip "collapsible", but for each format, how about "strut" and "folding", and for each of these, the three RF options? -- Hoary 07:00, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

I think that "strut folding" is commonly used for cameras that do not have a folding bed, but a back plate and a front plate, joined by bellows and struts, like the Makina. At least a Google search for "strut folding" shows such cameras. In my mind, the word "collapsible" is associated to a telescopic tube, or a system like the Minolta Vest or Minolta Six.
