The Zenit S is a further developement of the original Zenit camera, having a sync. contact added for flash, hence the S or C, which symbolizes the same in Russian. KMZ stands for Krasnogorskii Mekhanicheskii Zavod, meaning the Kranogrskii Mechanical Works. It was established just outside Moscow in early 1942 in an abandoned pottery factory.
