The Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 Compatible T System lens, Type 2, was the later of two 135mm preset T mount lenses distributed by Ponder & Best (later Vivitar) in the 1960s as a 135mm Basic Telephoto lens. Ponder and Best designated the family to which this lens belongs as the Compatible T System. With only one exception, the Compatible T System family consisted of prime lenses, including mostly long telephoto lenses. Most of the early family members, known as the Type 1 T mounts, were made by Tokina, known at that time as Tokyo Koki. The manufacturer of the Type 2 T mounts, such as this one, is currently unknown. It's possible that it was Tokina, Kino Precision, or another company. The lens is marked "Lens Made in Japan'. The Type 2 T mounts are easy to distinguish from Type 1 T mounts by several visible identifiers: the Type 2 T mounts have a smooth flat area at the bottom of a focusing ring, while Types 1 T mounts have a smooth tapered (angled) area at the bottom of the focusing ring; Type 2 T mounts have space between the two preset rings with markings that indicate aperture values when a 2x Tele Converter is attached, while Type 1 T mounts usually have the two preset rings immediately adjacent to each other with no markings on the barrel between the rings.
