The MVC-FD71 was part of the second generation of digital Mavica cameras, introduced by Sony in 1998 alongside the Mavica FD81 and FD91. This series was notable for its use of standard 3.5" computer floppy disks for storage, which simplified transfer of the JPEG images to a computer, helping the series become one of the more popular among early digicams.

The FD71 retains the low 640×480-pixel resolution of the original FD7, as well as the 10x zoom, with a 40–400 mm 35mm equivalent range. At the highest image-quality settings, a 1.4 MB floppy is limited to storing a maximum of 20 images.
