The Sony Alpha A290 was introduced in mid-2010 to replace the Alpha A230. In addition to re-ergonomizing the body design, Sony did rework the image processing engine so that it could process the 14 megapixels delivered by the camera's new powerful CCD as fast as the predecessor camera's 10 MP data. Despite of the A290's improved CCD image quality Sony then switched production of its cameras for Minolta AF mount to CMOS sensors.

Construction

The α290 camera body has a better grip than its predecessor A230. Its better grip ergonomy makes it slightly bigger, but surprisingly it's even a little lighter than the A230.
