Scovill Manufacturing Co. was founded as Abel Porter & Co. in 1802. It was based in Waterbury, Connecticut. In the early days of photography it began making silver-plated copper sheets for daguerreotype imaging, as well as other photographic goods. Scovill was the second largest jobbing trade company for photography supply in the U.S.A. In 1871 it bought American Optical Co. The budget versions of American Optical's cameras were sold under the Scovill brand. In 1889 one leading officer of Scovill bought the company and named it Scovill & Adams. In 1902 it was merged with the largest U.S. distributor, E. & H.T. Anthony. Together they were Anthony & Scovill.
