Following on the heels of the NX10 in the mirrorless NX-system from Samsung, the NX100 aimed more directly at the point & shoot upgrader, with a smaller body and only the rear OLED display as a viewfinder (an optional hot-shoe EVF was offered). An advantage of this approach is fitting a full APS-C sized sensor into a package roughly the size of Micro Four Thirds cameras like the Olympus E-P2 or Panasonic GF1.

Also introduced with this body were a pancake wide-angle 20mm f/2.8 lens, and Samsung's "i-Function" feature (which allowed the focus rings of i-Function lenses to do double duty as control wheels for other shooting parameters).
