The XZ-1 is a high-end, compact digital camera introduced in early 2011 by Olympus. It offers a 1/1.63" sensor whose size is somewhat larger than those of other digital compacts; and its restrained 10-megapixel specification allows each pixel to have a greater light-collecting area. Combined with a bright lens (opening to f/1.8 when at the wide end of its 4x zoom range), flash-free photos may be taken in poorer lighting conditions than is typical of pocket-sized cameras. However, a small pop-up flash is also provided.

The camera is only equipped with a 614,000 dot rear LCD screen for viewing; but an optional Olympus VF-2 electronic viewfinder may be inserted into the camera's hot shoe. The main selling point of the camera was the speed and quality of the lens—the first on an Olympus compact to carry the Zuiko branding, used on the company's interchangeable lenses.
