Upon release of this camera, Polaroid also released a portable printer called Polaroid P-500ir which is very similar to the printer portion of this camera, but with added support for CompactFlash media.
The camera features a 2 megapixel 1/2.7" CCD sensor. The lens is a 5.4 to 16.2mm (35 to 105 equilv) F2.8 to F4.4 (8 elements in 6 groups) with a 3x zoom lens. It has a 2" colour 113,000 pixel LCD screen. The camera features a lid area that when open allow more ambient light into the LCD screen, this is useful for bright surroundings. Close the lid for dark surroundings. Storage is usually included in the form of a 8MB SmartMedia card. For i/o interfaces it uses USB type B connector, and a composite RCA cord for video. It is powered by 4x AA batteries or 2x CR-V3 lithiums. It weighs in at approx. 680g.
Images are recorded in JPEG or TIFF with a maximum resolution of 1600×1200. A few built-in editing options included crop, brightness and sharpen are also available. There are five flash modes, auto, red eye, flash off, fill flash, slow sync, and slow sync redeye. Exposure compensation of ±2 EV. A unusual shooting mode includes a preset for black board and white board photography. Movie mode is also available with a resolution of 320×240 at 15fps, with the ability to trim the leaders and trailers.
The printer uses Polaroid type 500 film also known as Captiva film. Printing features include date, time and file name caption. Quantity of prints. You can also select a portion of the photo you want to print. Index prints are also possible with 4 or 9 photos per print. Printing of movie stills is also possible.
