The Olympus 35 RD was the last 'classic' fully manual mechanical shutter fixed-lens rangefinder to be introduced by Olympus.

It can be used in shutter priority autoexposure mode or manual mode which does not function with the built-in meter. The 40mm f/1.7 F.Zuiko lens is a 6-element design with a focus range of 0.85 m to infinity.

The exposure meter uses a CdS photo sensor located within the 49mm filter area. The metering has a range of 2.5 to 17 EV (ISO 100). Film speed can be set from 25 to 800 ASA.

The leaf shutter is located between the lens and is manufactured by Seiko. It has shutter speeds of 1/2 to 1/500 with stops at 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 plus B. The self-timer function has a 10 second delay. Since it is a leaf shutter the flash sync works at all shutter speeds.

The finder has a 0.6x magnification with a coupled rangefinder used for focusing. Within the finder is an aperture read out and a indicator for under / over exposure.

The film transport is single stroke advance lever and Film Rewind: Film release button on the bottom of the camera. PX625 1.35 volt mercury battery.
