The 50mm was a standard lens usually provided as a kit lens with 35mm cameras such as the [[Olympus OM-1/2/3/4|Olympus OM-1]] or [[Olympus OM-10/20/30/40|Olympus OM-G]].

As a cornerstone of the OM lineup, this lens had a long production run through several minor revisions. From earliest to latest, these can be identified as:
* "silvernose" (bright chrome rings around filter thread)
* blacknose but still engraved "F.ZUIKO" (F= 6th letter of alphabet, indicating 6 elements)
* engraved "ZUIKO MC" (multicoating)
* engraved "made in Japan" (all lowercase aside from the "J")
