The Mamiya U was introduced in 1981. It is one of the last few compact 35mm cameras released by Mamiya. A version in silver was released a few months after the black version. An autofocus version, the Mamiya U AF, was released in 1983.

Features

The Mamiya U is a very compact camera. It uses two common 1.5v AAA batteries, and provides a battery check. It uses a zone focus system with four distance settings: 1m, 1.5m, 3m (3ft, 5ft, 10ft) and infinity. Choose the focusing distance by rotating the tab on the lens ring. A cut out window on the lens shows icons of the focusing distance. A single person for 1m, a couple for 1.5m, a trio for 3m and a mountain for infinity. The electronically controlled shutter ranges from 1/8 to 1/500. There is an audible underexposure warning chirp with a red led in the finder. The front of the camera body has a switch that when slid upwards releases the electronic flash. Daylight flash is recommended for up to 1.5m. The self timer is operated by sliding down the dedicated button on the front. The timer has a 12 second delay. The lens and viewfinder is protected by a sliding cover. Use the sliding switch on top of the camera to uncover them, thereby powering the camera on. Film advance is by a thumbwheel dial. The camera is primarily made of plastic, except for the camera back and the manual film rewind crank on the bottom of the camera.

Issues

  • A notable problem with the camera is the ease with which the protruding plastic that covers the shutter button breaks.
  • During use, the flash head tends to drain the batteries if it is not retracted back into the body.
