The Leica MP is part of the Leica M-series rangefinder 35mm film camera system released in 2003. There was also another Leica MP released after the M3 in 1956.

The horizontally travelling cloth focal plane shutter has speeds of 1 to 1/1000 plus B mode. Flash synchronisation is available at 1/50 of a sec. The viewfinder has a 0.72 magnification with auto parallax correction. It has a RF base length of 49.9mm. The bright frame lines are automatically set based on the lenses used. It is compatible with the most commonly used focal lengths of 28 / 90 mm, 35 / 135 mm and 50 / 75mm lenses. The viewfinder eyepiece supports diopters with a range of ±3. It has a TTL meter with a range of -2 to 20 EV (ISO 100), with film speed settings of 6 to 6400 ISO. Three LED's are in the finder to aid in exposure calculation.
