In 2012 Leica announced the Leica M, their latest digital rangefinder camera. Fitted with a CMOS light sensor which provides live preview, the camera offers facilities not available on the M8 and M9.

Breaking with the traditional numbering sequence, the camera is marketed simply as Leica M.

An accessory electronic viewfinder turns the camera into an SLR and an R lens adapter is also available, allowing the majority of R lenses to be used and providing, after many years, a full frame Leica digital camera capable of using R lenses.

The camera's firmware includes profiles of many M and R lenses to optimise reproduction. M lenses fitted with the latest identifying code will automatically select the correct profile, for others this must be manually selected.
