The Hermagis Cinema projection lens comprises of a lens holder and focussing unit with tangential drive and a slide-in, smooth-walled lens tube which is marked off with its focal length. It seems that the lens tube, which holds a lens of Petzval design, was interchangeable in the lens mount. Early lenses were set in fully brass-bound tubes, later lenses had the brass tube replaced by nickel or other alloys. In the final years, Hermagis sold lenses with a stepped appareance, as well as projection lenses under the name 'Magister.'

The serial number of the lens is marked on the side of the front lens element mount amon the earlier examples, and on the lens bezel in the later units produced by SOM. As is common with Hermagis lenses, the sides of the lens cells are inscribed 'Hermagis Paris' with focal length and year of production (all in pencil).[1]

In the early 1900s Hermagis also reputedly manufactured the cinema projection lenses sold by and branded as Pathé.[2] By the late 1920s the production of all Hermagis-branded projection lenses occurred by SOM. These lenses are marked 'Hermagis SOM'.

List Hermagis projection lenses

Hermagis sold the lenses under the descriptions 'Objectif Cinema' and 'Magister.'

Objectif Cinema

Hermagis Cinema lenses have been documented with these focal lengths:

Smooth Cylindrical Barrel Lenses
  • 100mm (f/2.9)[6]

Hermagis Cinema SOM (projection lenses)

Stepped Barrel Lenses

The lenses are comprised of smooth-walled cyclindrical barrels with a stepped section of a lesser barrel diameter

Hermagis Magister

The Hermagis Magister is a Petzval-type projection lens cased in aluminium with a focussing thread on the lens sleeve. The front of the lens has a knurled surface to allow manual focussing. The lens is designed for 35mm slide projectors Some minor variations exist in the design of the lens housing.

Hermagis Magister lenses have been documented with these focal lengths:

  • 35mm f/1.6
    • with inscription surrounding the glass[21]
  • 50mm f/1.6
    • with inscription surrounding the glass[22]
  • 65mm f/1.6
    • with inscription on the outside[23]

  2. Discussion thread in Galerie Photo.—While it is documented that Pathé drew on Hermagis lenses for their 9.5mm film cameras (as well as Zeiss and Krauss), an examination of two Pathé Frére Paris Extra-Lumineux 150mm projector lenses (both Photographica Collection Dirk HR Spennemann) showed no markings on the sides of the front cells or any other indication that the Extra-Lumineux projection lenses were also made by Hermagis.
