In Camerapedia, the pages are indexed by wiki categories. To know more about what Wiki categories are and how to use them, you can follow this external link to the corresponding help page of Wikipedia.
Camerapedia is trying to setup its own policy of categorization. Before indexing your page, you can browse through the categories, all the way down from the Root category.
A page about a specific camera model should have the following categories:
- one or more categories for the type of camera
- a category for the lens mount if relevant enough
- a category for the country of origin
- a category for the camera maker if relevant enough
- one or two categories for the alphabetical index
For example, the Nikon D70 will likely have the following category syntax:
- [[Category: Digital SLR cameras]]
- [[Category: Nikon F mount]]
- [[Category: Japanese cameras]]
- [[Category: Nikon]]
- [[Category: N]]
- [[Category: D|D70]], this trick is to list the Nikon D70 under the D page at the right place, not at the bottom
The same page could be put in various other categories, for example in "SLR cameras". However, the general rule is not to put a page in the most specific category, and not to put it in a category and the mother category at the same time. So the D70 goes to "Digital SLR cameras" and is not listed under "SLR cameras". Currently this general rule is broken in some cases, for example:
- cameras from the former East Germany are considered by most people as being German as well, so are listed in both
- folding rangefinder cameras are considered by most people as being primarily folding cameras, so are listed both in "folding rangefinder" and in "folding"
