After World War II Germany became divided into the Eastern part which was occupied by the Soviet army, and the Western parts which were united, under the control of the Western Allied Forces of USA, UK and France. The biggest German camera and optics company group got divided too. VEB Zeiss Ikon in Dresden continued the East German central of the group which became the core of the later East German combinate Pentacon. The West German part continued the tradition of being part of Zeiss's network of companies. It became the ZEISS IKON AG with central in Stuttgart.
