The early important encyclopedias were written in the Age of Enlightenment, in times when mankind's knowledge was less advanced when viewed under scientific and technological aspects, and also written before ideology became a godless twin of religion which dominated societal development for ca. 12.000 years since the ice age. The editors of early encyclopedias allowed articles written in a more essayistic manner when a topic was needed but science couldn't deliver any secure propositions about it. Thus it's a good tradition to have a few essayistic articles in an encyclopedia.
