The EOS 700 and EOS 700QD is a auto focus 35mm film SLR camera released in 1990 by Canon. This camera mostly replaced the short lived Canon EOS 750 / 850 in the line up.

Features

The shutter is an electronically controlled metal focal plane with a range of 1/4 to 1/2000. In bulb mode an aperture is set at f/5.6. The X-sync is 1/125 of a sec.

The built-in TTL flash is the variety that can automatically pop-up when the meter senses there is not enough light. It also retracts automatically. Fill flash can work up to 2m (6.6 ft). An AF assist light is also present to aid in focusing in low light conditions with a length of 1 to 4m (3.3 to 13 ft).

The film transport is electronic with a speed of approx 1.2 fps. Upon initial film loading. It automatically winds the film to the end of the roll. After exposure it moves the exposed frames into the film canister reducing the risk of accidental light exposure with a open back. Because of this feature and different lengths of film, the number of exposures on the frame counter are counted down instead of up.

Program dial

This camera was unique in that it feature a pop out reversible program dial. One side having modes for (DEP) Depth of field, (mountain) Landscape, (face) portrait, (flower) macro, (glass) indoor, (3 persons) deep focus, (runner) stop action, (runner moving), (sun flash/dark backdrop) slow sync / fill flash and (dot and triangles) focus preset. The other side of the dial features shutter priority modes with speeds of B, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60, 125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000. Both sides have Battery check, Self Timer, (L) Lock off, and (P) Program.

Film and power

It is necessary to use DX coded film. It is capable of reading 25 to 3200 ISO. Non-DX film is set at ISO 25. The cameras is powered by a 6V 2CR5 enclosed within the front part of the hand grip. It is accessible using a coin to unscrew the cover. In normal conditions with 24 exp. film it is capable of 65 rolls of film without flash and 13 roll with flash.

QD Quartz Date

A EOS 700QD version is also available. It is able to imprint four different date formats through the year 2019 onto the film. It requires a separate CR2025 "coin" type battery.

Kit lens

The camera was available in two forms. Body only or with a kit containing a zoom lens. The lens often included was a 35-80 mm f4 to 5.6 zoom lens comprised of 7 elements in 7 groups. Closest shooting distance is 0.5m (1.6 ft). It has a 52mm filter ring. It was a bit unusual in design as it had no ring for the zoom. It offers a power zoom function by pressing two large buttons (with lone tree, three tree) on the left hand side of the lens barrel instead of the typical rotating ring.
