Canon EOS 50

The EOS 50 is a 35mm autofocus SLR introduced by Canon in 1995. An Eye Control focusing version is also available called EOS 50E. This model was succeeded by the EOS 30 in 2000.

In the Americas it is called EOS ELAN II while the Eye control version are called EOS Elan IIE. The Japanese version is called EOS 55 and was also available in black as well as two tone.

The electronic vertical-travel, focal-plane shutter has speeds of 30 sec. to 1/4000 sec., B. and flash sync at 1/125 sec. A electronic self-timer is built-in with audible beep and blinking lamp.

The meter uses a silicon photo cell for TTL full-aperture metering. It has three modes evaluative 6-zone, partial metering 9.5% at center focusing point and center-weighted averaging. Manual exposure compensation from ±2 EV in 1/2-stop inc. Metering range of 1 to 20 EV (ISO 100, f/1.4). Film speed range of 6 to 6400 ISO or 25 to 5000 ISO with DX film in 1/3 inc.

The Eye Control focusing has improved over the first generation. It now has the ability to be rotated and function in portrait orientation mode as well. It is also capable of focus tracking your eye movements when you press the shutter button halfway or during continuous shooting modes. An auto focus assist beam is also on the body to aid in focusing.

The film advance is motor driven and capable of up to 2.5 fps. Mid-roll rewind is possible and with CF mode adjustments able to select between high speed or silent rewind along with film leader in or out of the canister. It is not compatible with infrared film.

A built-in popup flash is included in the prism area of the body. It automatically pops up during auto, portrait or close up modes. It is powered by 1x 6V 2CR5 lithium battery. With 24 exp. rolls without flash or eye control it is capable of 110 rolls.
