The Canon EOS 1D Mark II was the company's second iteration of its "flagship" professional-level DSLR, introduced in 2004. It followed the same body style as the original EOS-1D, a large camera with an integral bottom grip and 1.3x crop-factor sensor. However its resolution was doubled, to 8 megapixels. In keeping with the Pro orientation, the body allows burst shooting at more than 8 frames a second, and a buffer holding up to 40 JPEGs. The shutter speed has been increased to 1/16000 sec. from the previous 1/8000. The flash sync has also been increased to 1/500 of a sec. from 1/250. Only the 2" diag. rear LCD seems underwhelming by later standards, but did increase the resolution from 120,000 to 230,000 pixels. There are now two flash memory slots. Supporting the previous CompactFlash as well as Secure Digital. In addition to 1394 firewire, it now supports USB. It was replace by a minor revision the Canon EOS-1D Mark II N in 2005.

The same "1D" form factor has continued its evolution up until the present (2011), with the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV.
