Camerapedia was founded under URL www.camerapedia.org in 2004 by User:Lbstone. He found a community for this strictly noncommercial wiki site which put things on the right track for creating a serious independent resource about cameras, camera lenses and accessories. User:Rebollo_fr became the main author, giving the encyclopdia a strong focus on Japanese cameras and its makers. In 2006 The Flickr group Camerapedia was founded to collect camera portraits as high-bandwidth illustration resource for the wiki.

The whole story was written by Rebollo_fr in his user page: Camerapedia nostalgia.

In January 2011 Lbstone was still owner of the URL, but he already had negociated the sale of the URL without informing anyone else of the wiki project community before he got the money. As direct result main contributors of wiki and Flickr image pool were not convinced anyway about the procedure that a long-running independent non-commercial project should be presented under the painfully ad-decorated "skin" of a commercial oranization like the URL's buyer Wikia company. Wikia made out of URL www.camerapedia.org a plain redirect to its camerapedia copy camerapedia.wikia.com . In the Flickr group's discussion User:steevithak devised the idea of "forking" the site before its move to Wikia. User:Voxphoto took it up, and both together founded the Flickr group Camera-wiki.org which became discussion pinboard and new Flickr image resource of Camera-wiki.org which shall be the noncommercial successor of Camerapedia. Compared to old Camerapedia it will have improved funding by donations. The old site's server was financed by Lbstone, the image resource space by the Flickr community.
